E-Portfolio

Michael's E-Portfolio

I am a student at the Univeristy of Michigan- Dearborn going into Elementary Education. My major is mathematics and my minor is integrated science. I have been placed in the following districts for fieldwork experiences : Dearborn Public Schools, Monroe Public Schools (Airport District), and Westward Public Schools.
This is my E-Portfolio and includes examples of different assignments in which I integrated technology. Included is a MS Word document, an MS Excel project, a concept map on the food chain which was created in Kidspiration, an evaluation page, my classroom website, a webquest, a podcast and a digital video on the water cycle. Visit each of the pages located on the top navigation bar to see examples of my work.

Below is a list of the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) and how I have grown in regards to these standards. The standards are in blue and my reflections are in black.

TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS.Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. Teachers:

A.)demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described in the ISTE National Education Technology Standards for Students) - I have grown in this standard in many ways. I learned many new techniques and technologies that I was not aware of. Specifically the podcast and the video were new concepts that I learned. I demonstrated these techniques as well as other basic ones like creating a MS Word document.

B.)demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.- I have grown in regards to this standard because of all of the new things I have learned. Kidspiration and webquests were two major things I learned about. I also plan on staying up to date on my classroom website with the newest technology.

PLANNING AND DESIGNING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AND EXPERIENCES.Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology. Teachers:

A.)design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners. -I have grown in this department in a few ways. The most important way was through the webquest and the Podcast lesson plan. These are both ways which i can apply technology to a lesson plan and a strong learning opportunity.

B.)apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences. -The webquest is where i have grown in this standard. The webquest uses research to accomplish the assigned tasks. The webquest would also meet other standards and I like that I have gotten to a place where I can tie them together.

C.)identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.- I have grown in this standard because I learned how to evaluate websites and educational software. The sheet for evaluation will be very handy and has given me a much better idea of what to look for when evaluating software.

D.) plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities. -With the podcast this is where I grew the most. I learned how to have students use the resources appropriatly to create the podcast as well as how to budge the time with the equipment with each student.

E.)plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment.- I learned about this with the podcast also. I learned how to manage time with the equipment so students will all have enough time to complete the assigned tast. This also comes into play with the webquest, depending on the number of computers we have and the number of appropriate websites for the assigned task.

TEACHING, LEARNING, AND THE CURRICULUM.Teachers implement curriculum plans, that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning. Teachers:

A.)facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.- This is met by all of the assignments that we completed this semester. I learned a lot from all of the assignments and I learned what the technology standards are, and how to meet them.

B.)use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students. - I learned how to meet this standard the most through the webquest as it allows the students to do things the way they need to. Students can work with a partner so that they are not alone on their task. They can help each other out.

C.)apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity. - I learned much about this standard with the podcast. Students are allowed to be creative with the podcast, while they still accomplish the required research. The video can also allow students to learn a great deal while still being creative. I learned how to manage and create these two assignements.

D.)manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.- I learned that this will depend on the district that I teach in and the resources that they have available to them. If the student has computers, microphones and video equipment available to them, we can enhance normal lessons.

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION.Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies. Teachers:

A.)apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques. -Seeing that technology such as creating spread sheets, graphs and using websites like rubistar.com for rubrics, has influenced this standard. I have learned how to use these to enhance evaluation.

B.)use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning. -This was done in the excel project. I learned how to use Excel to organize and analyze data. Making charts in this program is a way to communicate what the findings are.

C.)apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity. -through excel and rubistar.com, I have found a few new ways to help assess students in a way that utilizes technology.

PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE.Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice. Teachers:

A.)use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning. - I have learned ways to use technology to manage my classroom and my assignments. I can forward students learning using technology and I can use the internet to find websites which enhance my professional development. This will use the evaluation skills I have obtained since I need to see what is good for professional development.

B.)continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning. - I have learned with these projects, how technology can enhance learning. It is important to use technology in a way in which it enhances the educational goals, rather then just distract from the true purpose of the lesson.

C.)apply technology to increase productivity. - Productivity software will be used to do this, such as Word or Excel. They will make things like keeping grades straight, much easier and this semester I have learned how to do this.

D.)use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.- The classroom website project taught me how to communicate with parents and the community through things like the classroom blog and calander. I also have learned that on projects like webquests, students can work together and learn how to communicate with each other.

SOCIAL, ETHICAL, LEGAL, AND HUMAN ISSUES.Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice. Teachers:

A.)model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use. - I learned how to properly cite the technology that I have used and how to show this proper citation method. This method was demonstrated at the end of the video I created.

B.)apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities. -With the webquest and the and the video/podcast, students are able to embrace their differences and get creative. They are also able to work with partners so they can see other students differences and how that works.

C.)identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity -This would be embraced by an assignment being based on this topic such as a podcast or a video that enforces diversity and its benefits.

D.)promote safe and healthy use of technology resources. - I have learned that its good with things involving research, to have a prepared list of appropriate websites for students to use. This will cut out most of the chances of students finding unsafe or inappropriate information. There needs to be a close watch as students use the internet as well.

E.)facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students. - All students will be allowed equal time during all of the projects to accomplish the tasks. They will all be assigned time with their partners with the equipment and as a teacher I will be available to help them properly use thier time.
